Local camp to reopen, legacy intact
Hooray for Dutchess County Legislator Joel Tyner — wow, what a resource our local representative is! He is open, helpful, giving, enthusiastic, supportive and fun — the opposite of the “red tape, not my job, go through proper channels” bureaucrat we have all come to expect.
Camp Rising Sun sits on the border of Rhinebeck and Red Hook. As a local member of Save CRS (Camp Rising Sun), I have been trying to keep this low profile but extremely valuable international scholarship camp here, where it has changed lives (including mine) for more than 80 years.
Citing, among other things, the relative expense of running a very small summer camp in Dutchess County, the board of directors (charged with preserving an endowment to run the camp) planned last fall to sell the property and move to Pennsylvania or the Berkshires.
We contacted Joel, and instantly had an advocate/adviser/friend. He has helped us (several times) get the word out on his WHVW 950 AM Saturday morning radio show, helped us strategize, and got us access to and plan for an event at Rhinebeck Town Hall.
The sale and move has been reversed, and the camp’s board has announced plans to reopen the Red Hook camp in 2016, as reported in The New York Times (“Shaped by Camp, Alumni Fight to Prevent Its Move,” Sept. 6).
Talk about a “man of the people” and an “agent for positive change!” I am lucky he is here for us.
